Figma Community License Intake

Figma Community is not one open-source repository; every file, plugin, widget, paid resource, and slide template needs per-resource license and redistribution review.

Design Principle

An asset library cannot treat 'from Figma Community' as a license. Downloading, duplicating, commercial use, modification, redistribution, and RAG/training reference are different questions.

Large Theory

Figma Community is excellent for discovering UI kits, icons, templates, flows, and design-system examples, but its legal boundary is not one open-source license. A free file, paid resource, plugin, widget, or slide template may be governed by a Figma Community license, creator-added terms, CC BY 4.0, third-party asset licenses, or brand/trademark restrictions. Resource-curation agents must separate inspiration reference, copying into a project, redistributing as an asset, and commercial output.

Small Points

  1. Intake fields include at least creator, resource URL, resource type, free/paid status, license name, creator notes, third-party asset notes, commercialUse, redistribution, and attribution.
  2. Duplicating into a personal file does not mean the whole kit can be packaged into this project's public repo or a template marketplace.
  3. A UI kit's component structure can be studied, but icons, photos, fonts, brand logos, and illustrations may have separate licenses.
  4. Paid resources often restrict accounts, seats, or redistribution; purchase does not let agents automatically publish or share them.
  5. Slide templates, plugins, widgets, and files have different license terms and should not collapse into one Figma label.
  6. RAG may store summaries and links; before actually downloading or copying a resource, check the exact file page and creator notes again.

Design Judgment

A resource can enter the callable asset library only when it answers who created it, what kind of resource it is, which license applies, whether commercial use and modification are allowed, whether redistribution is allowed, whether third-party assets are included, how attribution works, and whether agents may download automatically. Otherwise it remains inspiration only.

Implementation Notes

Mark Figma Community resources as check-set-license or conditional by default unless a specific file provides a clear commercial-use license. Store the Figma URL, creator, screenshot, download date, license excerpt, prohibited actions, and open-source alternatives in metadata. If a future agent needs to download a resource, return a confirmation checklist instead of copying files immediately.

Counterexamples/Risks

Treating a free UI kit as MIT, reselling a paid template bundle, copying branded-logo components into a client project, ignoring creator-specific terms, saving only the Figma Community homepage instead of the exact file URL, and omitting license risk from RAG recommendations.

Case Study

Figma Help states that Community resource licenses vary by resource type and whether a resource is free or paid. Figma also publishes separate Community Free Resource License and Paid Resource License terms. Creative Commons explains that CC BY allows commercial use with attribution, CC BY-SA requires adaptations to share under the same terms, and CC BY-NC limits reuse to noncommercial contexts. The reusable lesson is to record licenses per resource, not per platform.

Agent Directive

When intaking Figma Community resources, record license, creator, third-party assets, commercial use, and redistribution boundaries per file; do not treat platform origin as a license conclusion.
