- Classify answer accountability first: casual exploration, internal workflow, customer-facing answer, high-risk domain, or compliance audit; higher levels need caveats, timestamps, no-answer behavior, exported evidence, and human review paths.
- Choose citation granularity: claim-level uses inline citations, answer-level uses a source list, and complex evidence uses source cards/drawers; do not cite every sentence just to appear trustworthy.
- Create a citation data contract: stable id, source type, title, href/locator, provider, snippet/quote, cited claim ids, retrievedAt, access state, status, and optional score.
- Separate answer, evidence, and reasoning: final answer stays readable, sources live in citation/cards, and tool logs/retrieval traces/reasoning summaries live in a separate collapsible area; do not expose hidden chain-of-thought as a trust feature.
- Streaming states must be honest: submitted, answer streaming, sources pending, partial sources, complete, error; do not show clickable final citation markers before source data exists.
- Source cards show title, domain/provider, date, snippet/quote, and open action; internal docs need permission/visibility labels, and missing/stale/inaccessible/low-confidence sources need visible states.
- Actions include open source, copy answer with citations, copy source link, report bad source, regenerate with sources, and export evidence; copy/share must not silently drop citations.
- Mobile cannot depend on hover popovers; inline citation triggers must be keyboard reachable, named, and closeable, while long URLs and snippets wrap without whole-page horizontal overflow.
- Choose resources by need: AI Elements for AI SDK + shadcn Sources/Inline Citation/Reasoning, assistant-ui for production chat runtimes, tool-ui Citation for schema-validated tool payload source cards, or custom UI for domain-specific evidence models.
